TEN

WE WERE HEADING BACK to Edinburgh, Douglas was driving – both of us preoccupied in deep thought. Douglas had called McGregor back, and had been probed about a rumour picked up by an undercover cop the night before. The rumour was going around that a senior drug cop was allegedly involved with a missing associate of Cameron Bullard, named Jason Stewart. Douglas had played well, kept his cool and told McGregor he'd look into it. Even to my ears, Douglas sounded genuine, but I guessed that if one lived a lie, telling lies was easy.

“I'm not sure if I want to know about you and Jason, but what I do need to know is whether you think you're about to be exposed?” I ventured.

I was organising my thoughts, trying to get a handle on this situation. The initial shock had subsided, and my brain was in analytical mode. Jason Stewart had to be linked to Emily's abduction. Why else would he have a photo of my girl on his phone? Who was he working for? I was starting to expand on this thought, maybe it wasn't Cameron Bullard? If not, then who could it be, and why hadn't I heard anything? An idea popped into my head, and I took out my phone just as Douglas answered.

“No, I don't think so. Jack told me yesterday that he knew about the meeting because Jason had told him, by way of an insurance. If he hadn't heard from Jason, Jack was going to shop me in today. Jason thought he had a play choreographed yesterday, but it didn't go according to plan. I killed him before he could tell me about Jack. If he had told me, then there might have been a different outcome. But then again, I wouldn't have seen the picture of Emily ... what are you doing, Hugo?”

“Checking my emails. I haven't done that since Emily was kidnapped.”

I logged into my account and waited for a moment for the inbox to upload onto my phone, the signal here was patchy, and it was taking its time.

“Okay.”

After saying that, Douglas fell silent. I knew he too was taking a step back, trying to look at this with some perspective.

I noticed that I'd received an email from Ariella Cantor that very morning. I opened it and read:

'Dear Hugo Storm. I have tried to contact you without any success. Both your mobile and office numbers go straight to voicemail. I just want you to know I have, with shock, read the news about the abduction of your daughter, Emily. I am utterly devastated by this terrible news, and my heart goes out to you and your family. I sincerely hope Emily will soon be found – safe and in good health. If there is anything I can assist with, please let me know. You already know this, but if I may say, I know how you feel. Just as I was starting to look into the apparent suicide of my late husband Victor, Chloe was abducted, and my world shattered.
